The CPM’s post-election review has described its Assembly poll defeat as a collective failure of the party, even as discussions within lower-level committees reportedly included criticism of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s role in the setback.
The state leadership stressed that accountability for the electoral loss rests with the entire organisation and highlighted the need for self-assessment and corrective measures. According to the review, party members at all levels should examine their shortcomings and work together to strengthen the organisation ahead of the next Assembly election.
The report urged leaders to engage in self-criticism to address mistakes and suggested action against those unwilling to acknowledge or rectify their errors. It identified three major reasons behind the defeat.
One key factor was the decline in support from Muslim and Christian voters, who had backed the LDF in the 2016 and 2021 elections but largely shifted towards the UDF this time. At the same time, the party also witnessed a significant erosion of support among Hindu voters.
The review further noted that after two consecutive terms in power, the LDF faced growing public dissatisfaction and a demand for political change. Opposition to certain government policies and stagnation within the party organisation also contributed to the outcome.
Additionally, the document expressed concern over the BJP’s victories in the Nemom, Chathannoor and Kazhakkoottam constituencies. It also warned that the party’s second-place finishes in six Assembly seats indicate an expanding political presence that should not be underestimated.
