In a major boost to its agricultural sector, Andhra Pradesh is making significant strides in the global market with its green banana exports. Farmers in the Rayalaseema region are leveraging modern farming techniques to produce high-quality bananas that are in great demand in international markets, particularly in the Gulf countries. Besides the Gulf, there is growing demand from Russia and Europe. The Netherlands raised concerns about packaging and cold storage, but not about the quality of the fruit itself.

The success of states like Andhra Pradesh in meeting the quality demands of countries like Russia and the Gulf nations is crucial for India to increase its overall share in the global banana market. This regional specialization and healthy competition among states are driving the growth of India's banana exports.

Andhra Target To Reach Rs 330-360 Cr Revenue

The TDP-led NDA coalition government has set a target to export 1.5 lakh tonnes of bananas to Gulf countries like Iran, Iraq, and Qatar this season, aiming to earn foreign exchange of Rs 330-360 crore. State agriculture and horticulture officials have set an ambitious target and working to improve to get exports of bananas this year, aiming to generate a more foreign exchange.

Last season, Andhra Pradesh exported 1 lakh tonnes of bananas, earning revenue of Rs 180 crore at a rate of Rs 18 per kg. This year, with increased market demand, the export price is expected to rise to Rs 21-22 per kg. The Robusta Grand Nain (G9 variety), cultivated across approximately 35,000 hectares in Anantapuram's Tadipatri and parts of Kadapa district, is the primary variety being exported due to its adherence to international standards.

Bananas with a diameter of 38-42 mm and a length of 4.2 cm are considered ideal for export. This focus on quality is what's fetching them a premium price in the international market.

Challenges In Global Market’s

While the supply chain to the Gulf countries is running smoothly, markets in Russia and Europe pose certain challenges. The Netherlands, for instance, has raised concerns regarding packaging and cold storage facilities, although it has no doubts about the fruit's quality. To overcome these hurdles, the state government is taking measures to develop food processing zones, cold storage, and packing centers. Officials believe that improving quality and packaging can double Andhra Pradesh's banana exports in the next 3-4 years, potentially bringing in up to Rs 500 crore in annual foreign exchange.

While specific revenue data for each state's banana exports can fluctuate yearly, a general comparison shows that states like Maharashtra and Gujarat have historically been dominant players in the export market. However, Andhra Pradesh's recent adoption of modern technology and its aggressive focus on quality and international standards are positioning it as a major force.

Comparison with Other Indian States

India is the world's largest banana producer. Country's total banana production is massive, with Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat being among the top contributors. All these states play a crucial role in banana exports. Maharashtra is well-known for its high-quality bananas and well-established export infrastructure. The Jalgaon region is often called the "Banana City of India," and the state primarily exports to the Middle East and Europe. In South, Tamil Nadu is also a major producer focusing more on domestic consumption and processing, though it contributes significantly to exports. Karnataka is also a significant producer, with a focus on both domestic and international markets. The state is exploring new export opportunities and improving its supply chain. In Western India, Gujarat has shown rapid growth in banana cultivation and exports, benefiting from its proximity to ports and modern farming techniques.

Andhra Pradesh, with its focus on modern technology and international standards, is emerging as a strong competitor to these states. Experts believe this healthy competition is enhancing India's overall banana export capabilities. The Indian government is also initiating pilot projects to facilitate low-cost exports via sea, which will further boost farmers' income and the country's foreign exchange earnings.
