A day after Cyclone Michaung delivered heavy rain, drowned parts of Chennai, damaged infrastructure, and left at least five people dead, it is predicted to proceed north and make landfall in Andhra Pradesh's Bapatla around midday on Tuesday. On Monday, the storm grew into a severe cyclonic storm.

The Chennai airport was forced to close due to rain, winds of 90–100 km/h, and gusts of up to 110 km/h. Aircraft were stuck as floodwaters submerged the runway. All aircraft were canceled till Tuesday AM. Numerous trains headed towards Chennai were also cancelled.

A maximum wind speed of 90 to 100 km/h was predicted for the system as it approached the Andhra coast, along with exceptionally heavy rainfall. According to M Mohapatra, director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bapatla is predicted to be crossed by the severe cyclone with a storm surge of one to 1.5 meters.

The IMD said in its hourly bulletin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday that the cyclone continued to be strong, with gusts reaching up to 110 km/h. According to the report, the cyclone was centered near south Andhra Pradesh about 7:30 am and was progressively heading north.

As severe Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall along the coast of Bapatla on Tuesday, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, issued an order on Monday directing officials to remain on high alert in case relief measures need to be taken. Reddy gave the officials instructions to handle the storm as a significant challenge in order to prevent loss of life and property at a review meeting at his camp office. Reddy gave the officers instructions to show compassion for the impacted parties. The chief minister declared that he would visit the impacted areas and that he would prefer not to hear grievances from the populace once the cyclone passes.
