The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is considering a floor test in Himachal Pradesh following its success in the recent Rajya Sabha polls, where it secured victories in Congress-ruled states. The Congress party in Himachal Pradesh is encountering numerous challenges following the results of the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha. Not only did the Congress lose the sole seat in the state, but it also faces potential rebellion from its legislators.

In a closely contested battle, BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan emerged victorious against Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The victory was notable for instances of cross-voting within the Congress ranks. The BJP's triumph, aided by the support of six Congress lawmakers and three independents, has placed Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in a precarious position. Reports indicate that the six MLAs who left Shimla for Haryana after voting are in communication with the BJP. In response, the Congress high command dispatched senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and D K Shivakumar to engage with the dissatisfied MLAs.

Amidst this turmoil, senior BJP leader and leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Jairam Thakur, met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan, leading to speculation about a potential trust vote against the Sukhvinder Sukhu government.

The 2024 Rajya Sabha polls witnessed significant political drama in three states, with instances of cross-voting influencing the outcomes. The BJP secured a resounding victory in Uttar Pradesh, securing all eight contested Rajya Sabha seats, while the Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) faced setbacks due to cross-voting. Meanwhile, despite instances of cross-voting within the state, the ruling Congress managed to secure three out of four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka.
