Equidistant from China and India: Dissanayake’s foreign policy

Sri Lanka, which has been ruled by centrist and moderate ideological leaders, is now under the leadership of a completely leftist leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, which is a significant change in the country's political spectrum.

The question now is whether Dissanayake, a leftist ideologue, will adopt a pro-China policy, which is a big power in South Asia under the Communist regime. In general, Dissanayake’s party Janata Vimukthi Peramune – JVP follows an anti-India attitude. After the winning of Dissanayake in recent President Elections, South-Asian media is discussing about the stand of Sri Lanka towards India and China. Question is - will Disanayake's government now bring Sri Lanka closer to China and distance it from India due to its leftist orientation? It is a question that many people have. How Dissanayake deals with neighbouring countries China and India will become crucial.

Dissanayake made interesting comments on relations with neighbouring countries the day after he was sworn in. He commented that they do not want to be torn like a sandwich between India and China. Dissanayake made it clear that they do not want to be under pressure between any two countries. In an interview given to a magazine, he expressed his stance on foreign policy.

Dissanayake made it clear that Colombo will stay away as much as possible from being caught between geopolitical enmities. He decided to not take any side in reference of foreign relations. New President has revealed that the Janata Vimukthi Peramune - JVP government has decided to balance India-China relations.

On the other hand, Dissanayake commented that a neutral stance is crucial to protect Sri Lanka's sovereignty at a time of rising regional tensions. At the same time, he said that they will focus on establishing diplomatic and partnerships that will be beneficial to both sides.
