Wipro promotes 31 employees to senior roles after top level exits

Wipro, an Indian IT services company, recently announced the promotion of six employees to senior vice president roles and 25 others to vice president roles. These promotions are seen as a strategic move to address the high-level turnover the company has experienced recently. Key executives like the finance chief, Jatin Dalal, Chief Growth Officer, Stephanie Trautman, and Digital and Cloud head, Barath Narayanan, have left the company in the past year.

According to Sundar Eshwar, an executive at staffing firm Xpheno, such promotions are common tactics used by enterprises to retain talent and mitigate attrition. Data from Xpheno shows that attrition rates across assistant vice president (AVP), vice president (VP), and senior vice president (SVP) roles in India's IT and consulting sector decreased from 15% in the previous fiscal year to 11% in fiscal year 2024.

Wipro acknowledged the promotions as part of its ongoing efforts to cultivate strong internal leaders. However, compared to the previous fiscal year, Wipro has promoted fewer senior employees, which analysts attribute to its underwhelming performance.

Under the leadership of CEO Thierry Delaporte, Wipro is projected to be the only one among India's top four IT firms to experience a revenue decline by the end of the fiscal year. In the previous promotion cycle in January 2023, Wipro promoted a record 73 employees, including 12 to SVP roles and 61 to VP roles.

According to Ray Wang, principal analyst and founder of Constellation Research, the slower rate of promotions may allow Wipro to focus on hiring specialized talent later in 2024 to 2025.

Some notable employees promoted to SVP roles include Ajit Mahale, Chief Delivery Officer; Anuj Kumar, healthcare portfolio leader; Benjamin Simon, Capco CFO; Kim Watson, Canada country head; Srinivasaa HG, Europe cloud sales head; and Satish Y, head of the cloud arm's strategy and execution arm.
