The Assam government has issued a special directive to the government employees of Assam. A husband or wife, an employee of the state government, will no longer be able to do a second marriage without the government's approval.

Notices have been sent to all the departments of the state government and the commissioners of all districts in this regard. These are strict instructions given in an office signed by Neeraj Verma, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, in accordance with the provisions of the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules 1965.

The Dispur order states that the parties involved in the discipline of this directive can implement the immediate departmental procedure under the provisions of the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. The authorities can impose penalties up to stringent penalties, including compulsory retirement, against government servants found violating this directive.

According to the said government rules, it will also be considered serious misbehaviour on the part of government servants who have a huge impact on society.

It is not clear how promptly the Assam government has focused on implementing this policy. However, before the law is brought by the government to stop polygamy, this rule imposed on government employees has now made headlines.
