The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a crucial warning for Delhi-NCR and several parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow. The impending monsoon surge is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Here are the key highlights:
Alert Zones: An orange alert has been issued for regions including Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal, and Badaun.
Lucknow’s Monsoon: The El Nino effect has subsided in Lucknow, allowing the monsoon to spread across Uttar Pradesh. On Monday, significant rainfall was recorded in various areas, including Aligarh, Baghpat, Barabanki, Bareilly, Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, and Lakhimpur Kheri. Kheri witnessed 110 mm of rainfall by 8:30 AM, while Kanpur received 41.2 mm in the morning, increasing to 17.6 mm by evening. Bareilly also experienced over 32 mm of rainfall.
Delhi’s Alert: Despite a brief respite from downpours, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are bracing for intensified rainfall starting from July 2. The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for the next two days, signaling the likelihood of heavy rain.
Gujarat’s Deluge: Gujarat faced heavy rains for the second consecutive day, with Kalyanpur taluka in Devbhumi Dwarka district receiving a staggering 174 millimeters of rainfall in a 12-hour period. The IMD has issued a ‘red alert’ for several districts, including Surat, Navsari, Valsad (south Gujarat), and Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Dwarka, and Kutch (Saurashtra-Kutch region) until Tuesday morning.
National Outlook: The IMD predicts above-normal rainfall for India in July, except for parts of the northeastern region. Nationally, July’s average rainfall is expected to exceed 106 percent of the long-period average of 28.04 cm.
