In connection with the tragic stampede at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 dead and over 50 injured, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and Cubbon Park police carried out a joint operation on Thursday night, arresting four individuals. Among those taken into custody is Nikhil Sosale, Marketing Head of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise. He was apprehended at Kempegowda International Airport while allegedly attempting to escape the city.
Two other arrested individuals, Sunil Mathew and Kiran, are associated with DNA Entertainment Private Limited, the event management company responsible for organizing the celebration. The trio, along with an unidentified fourth person, were reportedly en route to Mumbai when intercepted by authorities.
These arrests follow the suo motu First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Cubbon Park police. The FIR names the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee as responsible for the stampede, which occurred during the RCB team's victory celebrations after winning their first IPL trophy.
The tragic incident unfolded at multiple gates of the stadium as thousands gathered to witness the grand celebration. The police have also initiated a search operation for members of the KSCA Administrative Committee, who are currently absconding.
Authorities have intensified their investigation, focusing on alleged lapses in crowd management and safety measures during the event. The probe aims to identify the accountability of all stakeholders involved in organizing the ill-fated celebration.
