Committee on "One Nation One Election" submits report to President

The group headed by Ram Nath Kovind handed its report about the possibility of having one election for the whole country to President Droupadi Murmu. This special team, which includes Ram Nath Kovind and other important people, submitted the detailed report at Rashtrapati Bhavan. They suggest that Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies should have elections at the same time. They also say that elections for Municipalities and Panchayats should happen within 100 days of Lok Sabha elections.

To make these changes, they proposed adding Article 324A to the Indian constitution. They also mentioned what should happen if the house is evenly divided or if there's a motion of no confidence. They said states don't need to approve the change to have elections at the same time as Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.

The report, which is 18,626 pages long, is the result of discussions with various people and experts and 191 days of research since it started on September 2, 2023. The main idea of the report is to have one list of voters for all elections, including Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats.

The Union Law Ministry chose the members of this group, which includes important people like Home Minister Amit Shah, former opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, and former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap, among others.
