Trump Wins Again; Modi Celebrates 'Historic Victory

Donald Trump clinches a second term as U.S. President, winning key battleground states. PM Modi congratulates him, expressing hope for stronger India-U.S. ties.

In a decisive victory, Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, defeating Kamala Harris in a race marked by key wins in swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina. Trump, now set for a second term, addressed a large crowd in Florida, proclaiming this era as a “golden age” for America. He expressed his gratitude to voters for what he termed an “unprecedented mandate” and spoke of fostering national unity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined global leaders in congratulating Trump, calling him a “friend” and expressing his eagerness to renew collaboration. Modi posted on X, “Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory. ""As you build on the accomplishments of your previous term, I look forward to revitalizing our collaboration to deepen the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership.

The Modi-Trump relationship has historically been warm, highlighted by events like “Howdy, Modi!” in Houston and “Namaste Trump” in Ahmedabad, which showcased their camaraderie. Their diplomatic alignment has fostered close defense cooperation, especially against terrorism, with both leaders taking a firm stance on threats from Pakistan-based groups. They have also supported a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” countering China’s influence in the region and solidifying India’s role in the Quad alliance alongside the U.S., Japan, and Australia.

While the Trump-Modi partnership has been strong, trade remains a complex issue. Trump’s “America First” policy previously sparked tariff disputes, but both nations continue to seek balanced trade solutions. During the Covid-19 crisis, the partnership extended to health cooperation, with India sending hydroxychloroquine to the U.S., reciprocated by American support for India’s pandemic response.

As Trump prepares for his second term, experts anticipate a strengthened Indo-U.S. alliance focusing on defense, economic growth, and global stability amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war.
