Thalapathy Vijay gave up his superstar status and dove straight into politics, launching Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Instead of teaming up with the usual alliances, he backed his hardcore Gen Z fans and a strong grassroots crew to shake the system. Everybody expected TVK to flop—exit polls said so—but Vijay shredded those predictions and took down the ruling DMK, controversy and all. His promises weren’t just empty words either; stuff like youth education loans, financial support for women, and a caste census really struck a chord with people.
With this sweeping win, Vijay brought back the old tradition in Tamil Nadu—movie stars becoming political giants—and suddenly, everything about the state's politics feels brand new.
We see that line from his film “Jananayakan,” where he says, “There is no idea of going back... Am I coming!”? It was almost prophetic. When Vijay jumped into politics, people went wild—the whistles echoed everywhere. He wasn’t just another actor-turned-leader; he smashed all the predictions, formed a new government, and cemented himself as a genuine ‘Master’ in politics. Honestly, this is Vijay’s ‘Beast’ mode, and Tamil politics will never be the same.
Gen Z’s ‘G.O.A.T’
Two years ago, in February 2024, Vijay launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). His opening speech immediately won hearts: "Politics is not just another profession or a hobby for me; it is my passion and a sacred duty to serve the people." Announcing that “Jananayakan” would be his final film, he dedicated his future entirely to the public. Capitalizing on his massive Gen Z fanbase, Vijay chose to contest the recent elections entirely on his own without any alliances, truly emerging as the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time) for the youth.
Roar of the Fans
Vijay’s political ambitions had been brewing for years. Back in 2009, he united around 85,000 fan clubs into a welfare organization called “Vijay Makkal Iyakkam” (VMI). While initially focused on social service, the group backed the AIADMK alliance in the 2011 elections, revealing his political aspirations.
Even before his official entry, Vijay was a vocal advocate for social issues, participating in anti-NEET protests in 2017 and supporting Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen in 2011. When his VMI cadre won 115 out of 169 seats as independents in local body elections a few years ago, it laid a serious foundation for his political career.
Overcoming the Controversies
Thalapathy’s political journey was not a walk in the park. Early on, he was surrounded by controversies. A tragic stampede at a Karur election rally last September claimed 41 lives, leaving a dark mark on his campaign. Personal challenges also arose when his wife, Sangeetha, filed for divorce earlier this year, giving his rivals political ammunition. Additionally, the censor board temporarily blocked his final movie, “Jananayakan”, creating a massive political stir. However, the way Vijay handled these issues impressed the public. Instead of launching bitter counter-attacks against his rivals, he remained focused on taking his party's ideology directly to the people.
A ‘Blockbuster’ Manifesto
TVK’s election manifesto struck a major chord, especially with women and the youth. Promises like diesel subsidies, insurance policies, and a fishermen's relief fund drew voters in. The real game-changers were his welfare schemes: educational loans up to Rs 25 lakhs for the youth, Rs 2,500 in financial aid for women, six free gas cylinders a year, and 8 grams of gold as a wedding gift for young women. Furthermore, his promise of a caste census during the party's first public meeting and his aggressive stance against the ruling DMK's corruption sealed the deal.
The Next 'MGR' of Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has a rich history of embracing film stars as political leaders, from M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and C.N. Annadurai to J. Jayalalithaa. Vijay’s massive victory proves that the Tamil people's love for their screen idols remains as strong as ever. While the majority of exit polls confidently predicted that the DMK would retain power, only one survey foresaw Vijay's triumph, boldly claiming he would become "another MGR." Looking at today's sweeping election results, TVK has proven that prediction entirely right.
