Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Lahiru Thirimanne got into a serious car accident in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, on Thursday. He was rushed to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital after his car collided head-on with another vehicle. Although the exact extent of his injuries is not known, he is currently in stable condition. There was at least one more person in the car with Thirimanne, and they are also receiving medical treatment.
At the time of the accident, Thirimanne was playing for the New York Strikers in the Legends Cricket tournament. The team released an official statement confirming the accident and stating that Thirimanne and his family were visiting a temple when the incident occurred. Fortunately, after a thorough medical evaluation, it was determined that they were all safe and recovering well. The team requested privacy for Thirimanne and his family during their recovery process.
Reports indicate that Thirimanne was on a religious pilgrimage when the accident happened. His car collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction, resulting in severe damage to the vehicle.
Thirimanne had a successful cricket career, playing 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs, and 26 T20Is over the span of a decade. He participated in three T20 World Cup tournaments, including the victorious 2014 edition. Thirimanne announced his retirement from cricket in July 2023.
