Kerala’s football fans are in for a historic treat as the Argentina national football team, led by the iconic Lionel Messi, is set to visit the state next year. The announcement, made by Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, confirmed that the team will participate in an international exhibition match organized by the state government.
Titled Olopo Magic, the event is spearheaded by the All Kerala Gold and Silver Merchants Association (AKGSMA), with financial support from local merchants. Entry passes for fans will be available through the Olopo app, a platform launched during the Grand Kerala Consumer Festival. The app allows users to earn reward points for purchases at partnered retail outlets, which can then be redeemed for match tickets.
While Kochi is being considered as the primary venue, the opponent team for the exhibition matches is yet to be announced. The event will feature two matches, showcasing Kerala’s passion for football on an international stage.
A high-level delegation, including Minister Abdurahiman, recently met with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in Madrid. The talks were described as “highly productive,” with further discussions planned when an AFA delegation visits Kerala in the coming months.
Beyond the matches, the discussions included plans for football academies in Kerala, aiming to elevate the state’s sports infrastructure.
This event is expected to cement Kerala’s reputation as a footballing hub in India and draw global attention to its fervent fanbase.
