This is the first time in the history of international cricket that a cricketer has been timed out. Sri Lanka's batsman Angelo Mathews had to return without playing a ball on the field. Bangladesh's captain Shakib Al Hasan's appeal was accepted by the umpire. He had to return as he took the strike later than scheduled.

The incident took place in the 25th over of Sri Lanka's innings. Matthews came out to play after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed. But before he could take the strike, Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the on-field umpire. They claimed that the stipulated time had passed. Mathews didn't take the strike either.

In fact, the helmet that Angelo Mathews took to the field probably had a torn ribbon. Television replays showed the ribbon with which his helmet was stuck to tear or open while tying it. Later, his teammate gave him another helmet. But, by then, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan had appealed to the umpire; Mathews had not come out to bat within the stipulated time. So the umpire gave Mathews a timeout.

Mathews, however, spoke to Shakib Al Hasan and other cricketers of Bangladesh about the same. He also tried to convince the umpires about the helmet. But to no avail. Mathews threw his helmet on his way back from the field after being timed out without playing a single ball. His expression showed how disappointed he was at the incident.

It should be noted that, according to Section 40.1.1 of the MCC Act, a batsman who comes after a batsman is out or retired has to be ready to face the ball within three minutes. Otherwise, the batter who comes in can be called out. However, in the playing conditions of this year's World Cup, it is said that if this happens in the tournament, the player has two minutes to do so. Matthews passed it. As a result, the umpire agreed to the appeal of the Bangladesh Cricketers and dismissed Mathews.
