A total of 117 Indian athletes are set to participate in the Paris Olympics. The Sports Ministry approved the final list on Wednesday. Besides, 140 support staff and officials will also go to Paris. The central government will bear the expenses of 72 of them. The name of Bengali shot putter Abha Khatua is not on this list. With the list finalized, Avar is unlikely to go to the Olympics.
Ava got a chance in the Olympics because of the world ranking quota. However, her name was dropped without explanation. Ava's name did not appear on the list released by the World Athletics Association a few days ago. There was no explanation as to why Ava's name was not mentioned due to injury, doping, or other problems.
India has the largest contingent in athletics, with 29 athletes. Among them are 11 female and 18 male athletes. This is followed by shooting (21) and hockey (19). There are eight in table tennis and seven in badminton. There are six each in wrestling, archery, and boxing. There are four players in golf, three in tennis, two in swimming, two in sailing, and one each in horseshoeing, judo, rowing, and weightlifting.
There were two other representatives of India at the Tokyo Olympics. India has won the most medals in the Olympics so far. According to the Indian Olympic Association, there will be 67 support staff in the Games Village. Apart from this, 72 more people will stay in a nearby hotel outside the Games Village at government expense.
