Bharti Airtel, one of India’s telecom giants, has introduced a revolutionary AI-powered spam detection system that has blocked a staggering 8 billion spam calls and 800 million spam messages within just two and a half months of its rollout. The innovative solution uses advanced algorithms to detect and flag nearly one million spammers daily, transforming the way unwanted communication is tackled in the telecom sector.
Airtel's system has identified approximately 6% of all calls on its network as spam, alongside 2% of all messages. Through proactive alerts sent to 252 million unique customers, the company achieved a 12% reduction in the number of users responding to suspicious calls. This decline signifies a major shift in user behavior, driven by the system's ability to increase awareness and prevent engagement with potential scams.
Delhi emerged as the focal point of spam activity, recording the highest number of spam calls received and originating from the region. Andhra Pradesh and Western Uttar Pradesh followed as spam call hotspots. Meanwhile, 35% of spammers were found using landline phones, highlighting a traditional yet persistent spam channel.
When it comes to spam messages, Gujarat led as the origin point, with Mumbai and Chennai seeing the highest targeting. The insights underline the regional distribution of spam activity, enabling Airtel to refine its countermeasures.
Airtel’s data revealed a clear demographic targeting pattern by spammers. Male customers were the primary targets, making up 76% of all spam call recipients. Individuals aged 36–60 received nearly half (48%) of all spam calls, while those aged 26–35 accounted for 26%. Senior citizens, on the other hand, experienced significantly fewer nuisance calls, comprising only 8% of the total.
The timing of spam calls is another crucial insight. Activity starts at 9 AM, intensifies through the day, and peaks between noon and 3 PM, with Sundays seeing a 40% decline in call volume. Additionally, devices priced between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000 received 22% of all spam calls, suggesting targeted patterns based on user segments.
Airtel’s AI solution has set a benchmark in the telecom industry by effectively identifying and neutralizing spam activity in real-time. By providing robust protection against unwanted communication, it not only enhances customer experience but also demonstrates the transformative power of technology in addressing complex challenges. This milestone reflects Airtel's commitment to leveraging AI to create a safer communication ecosystem.
