The United Democratic Front (UDF) has decided to support the implementation of the PM SHRI scheme in Kerala, stating that the state should not forgo Central assistance linked to the programme. The decision marks a shift in the alliance's earlier position, as leaders, including those from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), did not oppose the proposal during the state coordination committee meeting.
Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan argued that there was no justification for allowing eligible Central funds to remain unutilised. Although the IUML had earlier voiced strong objections to the scheme, its representatives did not raise any resistance during the meeting. Senior Congress leaders, including KPCC president Sunny Joseph and former state chiefs M. M. Hassan, Ramesh Chennithala, K. Sudhakaran and K. Muraleedharan, also refrained from objecting to the move.
The state government had previously formed a four-member Cabinet sub-committee to study the PM SHRI scheme. However, the UDF's decision to proceed with the programme has reduced the significance of the panel's recommendations.
Briefing the media after the meeting, UDF convener Adoor Prakash said the Cabinet sub-committee would still identify the schools to be covered under the scheme. He noted that the earlier government had already signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for PM SHRI, making it a continuing commitment for the present administration. He also maintained that the financial assistance under the scheme rightfully belongs to Kerala.
On the question of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP), the UDF said the government would take a decision only after evaluating what would best serve the state's interests.
The meeting also resolved to set up a separate sub-committee to prepare the UDF's liquor policy. The proposal to permit low-alcohol beverages was not discussed. In addition, the alliance announced plans to organise a one-day conclave after Onam to review major policy issues and prioritise commitments outlined in its election manifesto.
The UDF further expressed support for the Chief Minister's efforts to attract domestic and foreign investment to Kerala and endorsed the proposal to introduce a second land reforms legislation.
