Tensions are escalating within the Kerala Congress amid uncertainty surrounding the presidency of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). K Sudhakaran, who refrained from assuming the post during elections due to his candidacy in Kannur, has not been reinstated despite the conclusion of the state polls. M M Hassan has temporarily held the position in his absence.
Anticipation swelled ahead of a recent KPCC leadership meeting, with expectations rife for Sudhakaran's reinstatement. However, representatives from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), notably Deepa Das Munshi and K C Venugopal, advocated for a decision from the party's high command, emphasizing that the election process remains ongoing until results are officially declared.
Amidst this uncertainty, concerns have arisen among Sudhakaran's supporters, fearing a potential ousting from the presidency. Allegations regarding Sudhakaran's association with Monson Mavunkal, a figure implicated in fraudulent activities, as well as his involvement in a cheating case, have cast shadows over his leadership. Additionally, his contentious remarks targeting opposition leader V D Satheesan have further fueled internal discord.
Furthermore, a faction within the party is purportedly in favor of retaining Hassan, citing his seniority and experience, especially with the impending 2026 assembly elections on the horizon. As the party grapples with these internal dynamics, the fate of the KPCC presidency hangs in the balance, awaiting a definitive directive from the party's central leadership.
