The BJP has intensified its attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the tragic death of a woman at a state-run hospital in Midnapore. The woman, Mamani Ruidas, died after childbirth allegedly due to the administration of expired intravenous (IV) fluid. Four other women were also critically ill after receiving the same treatment, prompting widespread outrage.
Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, led a delegation of BJP MLAs to the Swasthya Bhavan in Kolkata, demanding immediate action against Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the health portfolio. Adhikari stated, “Mamata cannot escape responsibility as health minister. The death of this woman due to expired IV fluid is a clear reflection of the government's criminal negligence in the healthcare sector.” He called for Banerjee’s resignation and arrest, accusing her of failing to address systemic issues in the state-run healthcare system.
The incident took place at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), where Mamani Ruidas passed away after giving birth. Investigations revealed that the expired IV fluid, allegedly supplied by the state-owned Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals, contributed to her death. In response to the incident, the West Bengal government has ordered a CID probe, but Adhikari expressed doubts about its credibility, suggesting that the government was trying to suppress the facts.
The BJP leader also demanded the resignation of state health secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam and the superintendent of MMCH. Adhikari has filed an FIR against health officials, holding them accountable for the death. He further called for a special investigation committee led by a sitting judge from the Calcutta High Court, with members from both the CBI and CID.
Adhikari accused the state government of trying to cover up negligence, drawing comparisons to the RG Kar hospital incident. The BJP has pledged to continue raising the issue and mobilize mass protests until justice is served.
