PM Modi, NDA Cabinet Resign Ahead of Oath-Taking Ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  tendered the govt’s  resignation to President at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday. This move precedes the oath-taking ceremony for Modi's third term. Modi also recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, which the President accepted. She requested PM Modi and his ministers to continue in their roles until the new government assumes office. The decision followed a Cabinet meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Modi, which recommended the dissolution of the Cabinet whose term ends on June 16.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal-United (JDU), regarded as potential "kingmakers," have agreed to support the formation of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. The TDP and JDU are expected to submit formal letters of support during the alliance's meeting later on Wednesday.

A meeting of the newly elected MPs of the NDA, led by the BJP, is scheduled for June 7 in New Delhi. Discussions will focus on the formation of the new government. The BJP secured 240 seats and the Congress won in 99 seats out of 543 constituencies. This represents a significant decrease for the BJP, which won 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014. Conversely, the Congress improved its tally from 52 seats in 2019 and 44 seats in 2014.

The INDIA bloc, comprising opposition parties, crossed the 230 mark, posing stiff competition to the BJP and defying exit poll predictions. Although PM Modi has secured a third term, the BJP will need to rely on coalition support from parties like Nitish Kumar's JDU and Chandrababu Naidu's TDP.

The opposition INDIA bloc will also convene on June 5, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hosting alliance leaders at his residence. Following a favorable outcome in the Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA bloc will strategize their next moves.
