Nepal's Prachanda government faces a fresh threat

A challenge has been faced by the government and front under the leadership of Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda. Upendra Yadav, the deputy prime minister, is posing the challenge. Recently, Upendra Yadav, the deputy prime minister, resigned.

In addition to his resignation, Yadav withdrew his party's support for the government. On Monday, the deputy prime minister handed Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal his letter of resignation.

Along with Yadav, the country's Minister of State for Forest and Environment, Deepak Karki of the same party, also resigned. It is to be noted that Upendra Yadav-led 'Samajwadi Party-Nepal' split into two a week ago, and senior party leader Ashok Rai formed a new party called 'Janata Samajbadi Party'.

The nation's Election Commission later recognized the new party. The resignation of Upendra Yadav after the party split was highly significant. There were 12 MPs for the Samajwadi Party-Nepal in Nepal. However, when Rai joined the new party, along with 30 members of the central committee and six additional party MPs, it currently had five MPs in the country's parliament.

With 77 MPs, the prime minister's party continues to hold a majority in the cabinet. Also, the current government has 32 members of the Mawist Centre, 21 from the Rashtriya Samajwadi Party, 7 MPs from the Janata Samajwadi Party, and 10 from the CPM-US. The government needs to hold at least 138 seats out of a total of 275 members.
