Rahul Mamkootathil, the Congress MLA from Palakkad, has returned to his constituency after an absence of 38 days caused by serious sexual harassment allegations. He left Palakkad on August 17, and the allegations against him surfaced just three days later. Mamkootathil made a public appearance recently to attend the funeral of a local Congress leader’s brother and is reportedly preparing to resume his political activities.

Though suspended from the Congress Party’s primary membership, Mamkootathil still retains support from some local leaders. However, the district party leadership fears that his return may harm the party’s public image. The controversy surrounding him deepened when he attended a Kerala Legislative Assembly session despite opposition from the Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan. The Speaker allowed his attendance but imposed certain restrictions.

The allegations involve accusations by writer Honey Bhaskaran and model Rini Ann George, including stalking, obscene behavior, and persistent harassment. These serious complaints have ignited public outrage and forced Mamkootathil to resign from his position as the State President of the Youth Congress. Despite this, he has continued as an MLA since no legal action or disqualification has barred him from holding office.

The political atmosphere in Palakkad remains tense due to the ongoing scandal, which poses challenges for the Congress party's local leadership as they balance political support and public perception. Mamkootathil’s political future remains uncertain as the allegations continue to cast a shadow over his career and the image of the party in the region.

This development is a critical issue in Kerala politics, highlighting the complexities surrounding sexual misconduct allegations and the accountability of elected representatives. The situation remains under close watch by both the party and the public.
