The dispute between the CPM and the CPI over the Deputy Leader of the Opposition post has intensified, exposing growing strains within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) after the Assembly election defeat. The disagreement has delayed meetings of both the LDF and its legislative party, leaving the opposition unable to coordinate major campaigns against the UDF government.
The LDF meeting, originally scheduled for June 15, has been postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing standoff. The delay has also led to dissatisfaction among smaller allies, who believe the front is missing opportunities to jointly challenge the government on issues such as the PM SHRI scheme, low-alcohol liquor policy, the State Election Commissioner's appointment, government pleader appointments, and the proposed stake sale in Vizhinjam Port.
Although CPM and CPI-affiliated youth and student organisations have continued to organise separate protests, the absence of coordinated agitations reflects the widening divide within the alliance.
The disagreement has become more public after CPI leaders openly questioned the CPM leadership. CPI assistant secretary P. P. Suneer challenged Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan's assertion that the deputy opposition leader issue had already been settled, asking whether the statement represented his personal opinion or the CPM's official position.
The CPM argues that convention has long reserved both the Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition posts for the party. The CPI, however, believes the time has come to revise these longstanding practices, arguing that sharing key positions among allies would strengthen the LDF and bring renewed energy to the coalition.
