APCC chief Sharmila's son, Raja Reddy, is reportedly preparing to enter active politics soon. Sharmila is already devising a strategy to pass on her father, the late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy's political legacy to her son, Raja Reddy. Her recent announcement that her son would be entering politics soon has sparked a discussion in political circles.
Sharmila brought her son to Kurnool market yard to console the onion farmers. This was Raja Reddy's first political trip. According to those close to Sharmila, he sought the blessings of his grandmother, Vijayamma, before leaving home. It is believed that Sharmila is already preparing a strategy to pass on the legacy of his grandfather to her son.
Grandfather's Legacy or Congress's Strategy?
Due to disputes over property distribution, Sharmila split from her brother YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and started her own party in Telangana, which she later merged with the Congress. She took charge as the AP Congress chief for the 2024 elections. While the Congress did not win a single seat, Sharmila's camp claims they played a key role in YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) defeat. However, some key leaders left the Congress party due to disagreements with Sharmila's approach. On the other hand, while a large number of defections from Jagan's party were expected, no such signs have appeared yet.
Therefore, she has started efforts to bring her son, Raja Reddy, onto the political stage as the political heir of YS Rajasekhara Reddy. However, it is doubtful whether the Congress high command has given its approval for this!?.
Is This a Move to Counter YS Jagan?
In the politics of the Telugu states, it is a fact that sons have more opportunities and acceptance as political heirs than daughters. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has no sons; he has two daughters. Therefore, Sharmila believes that in the coming days, the legacy of YS Rajasekhara Reddy will go to her son only. Hence, it is rumoured that she is trying to groom her son in that direction.
Sharmila's husband, Morusupally Anil Kumar, alias Brother Anil, runs Christian missionary. He does not directly involve himself in politics due to religious reasons. Anil manages political affairs from behind the scenes. While Sharmila ran her own party in Telangana for some time, it was not successful at all. She then closed the party and took over as the Congress president in AP. It is an open secret that she worked against her brother YS Jagan in the 2024 elections and directly contributed to Chandrababu Naidu's victory. The strategy behind her move to bring her son into the political arena will soon become clear.
