The CPM has criticised Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan over his recent remarks on the role of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), alleging that his comments were offensive to the Muslim community and undermined the state’s secular traditions. The controversy emerged after Satheesan discussed the League’s political significance and its contribution to maintaining communal harmony during an interview with The New Indian Express (TNIE).

The CPM Malappuram district secretariat strongly objected to Satheesan’s assessment that weakening the IUML could create space for extremist organisations in Kerala. The party argued that the statement unfairly portrayed the Muslim community as vulnerable to radicalisation in the absence of the League’s political influence. It also called on the Congress and the IUML to clarify whether they agreed with the Chief Minister’s assessment of the community’s political outlook.

In its response, the CPM maintained that Satheesan’s remarks were disrespectful towards Muslims and had the potential to damage Kerala’s established traditions of secularism and social coexistence. The party emphasised that the overwhelming majority of Muslims in the state remained committed to secular values and peaceful coexistence with other communities.

The CPM further argued that Kerala’s social fabric had historically been strengthened by mutual respect, communal harmony and cooperation among different religious groups. It cautioned against making political assessments that could create the impression that an entire community might turn towards extremism if a particular political organisation lost influence.

The controversy has also drawn a response from within the Congress, with Ponnani MLA K.P. Naushad Ali expressing support for Satheesan’s position

He maintained that Satheesan had drawn attention to the IUML’s longstanding contribution to preserving communal harmony in the state. According to the Congress legislator, the Chief Minister’s remarks underscored the League’s significance in maintaining a balanced political environment and preventing the growth of divisive forces.

The exchange has brought the political relationship between the CPM, Congress and IUML into focus, with the debate centring on the League’s role in Kerala’s secular politics and the implications of Satheesan’s comments for communal relations. While the CPM has accused the Chief Minister of making an unfair generalisation about Muslims, Congress leaders have defended his assessment as recognition of the IUML’s contribution to communal harmony.
