The report, presented at the two-day state committee meeting that began on Wednesday, examined the organisational lapses that may have contributed to the electoral setback.

The secretariat said it was important to understand why people voted against the Left despite the government implementing several development and welfare measures.

The state committee meeting also witnessed criticism of the leadership, particularly over its failure to address internal party issues.

During the open discussions, leaders said drastic and comprehensive changes were needed. It is learnt that the discussions were not directed against any particular leader.

Some leaders pointed out the need to examine why even CPM cadre and traditional supporters voted against the LDF. They also called for self-criticism and introspection by individual leaders.

In an apparent reference to the CPI, some leaders said certain developments within the Left front had contributed to a loss of public trust.

Public remarks made by CPI leaders, especially on issues such as PM Shri, placed the CPM under suspicion and allowed the UDF to capitalise on the situation.

Leaders also said that, more than direct criticism, the CPI’s public statements lent credibility to the UDF’s allegations of a “deal” between parties. In addition, speculation over KC(M) potentially leaving the LDF created an impression that minorities could continue to remain with the front.

According to the leaders, this perception also contributed to the consolidation of votes in favour of the UDF.
