Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma voiced his disapproval of the Congress's rejection of an invitation to attend the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22, referring to it as a "golden opportunity" for the party to "reduce its sin." Sarma expressed his opinions on social media, highlighting that the Congress leadership had received an invitation from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) for the Shri Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha Mahotsava.

On X, Sarma wrote, "The @VHPDigital had given the Congress party a golden opportunity to reduce its sin by extending their leadership an invitation to attend the Shri Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha Mahotsava." He continued by saying that, given their long history of opposition to the Ram Mandir, he did not think the Congress deserved such an invitation.

Sarma drew a comparison between Pandit Nehru's treatment of the Somnath Temple and the Congress's potential symbolic apology to the Hindu community had it accepted the invitation.
