In a significant statement, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Thursday referred to the Kumbh Mela as 'Mukti Mela' (Freedom Fair), emphasizing its deep spiritual and cultural importance. His remarks came amid a political debate following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s criticism of the event, where she termed it 'Mrityu Kumbh' due to reported incidents of stampede.

Governor Bose, who recently visited the Kumbh Mela and took a holy dip in the sacred waters, refrained from engaging in political controversy. Addressing the media at Raj Bhavan, he stated, "I don't want to enter into any controversy. It's a democratic setup, and the CM is entitled to give his or her own analysis based on the political position they hold. I welcome that as the beauty of democracy."

However, he maintained his own perspective on the Kumbh Mela, describing it as a unique spiritual congregation that symbolizes India's cultural and religious heritage. "I see Kumbh Mela as the culmination of the great tradition that India has. It is a communion with God, a space where millions gather voluntarily out of their devotion and faith. I think it forms a rainbow bridge that connects earth with the sky, man with God, and the inner world with the outer world," Bose explained.

Further elaborating on the religious significance of the event, he also called it 'Mrityunjay Mela', signifying victory over death through spirituality. He stressed that the Kumbh Mela stands as an enduring testament to India’s timeless traditions and the spiritual aspirations of its people.

The Governor’s remarks reflect a neutral and respectful approach to the religious sentiments associated with the Kumbh Mela, avoiding any political confrontation. His visit to Prayagraj and his participation in the rituals underscore the cultural significance of the gathering, which remains a vital part of India's spiritual identity. While political opinions may vary, the Governor’s words highlight the unifying and transcendent nature of the Kumbh Mela, reinforcing its position as a revered cultural and religious festival in India.
