In the 2019 elections, 72.44% of voters casted their votes. There are 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. It is the fifth highest in the country, after Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Tamil Nadu's elections witnessed competition between the Four Parties i.e., DMK, AIADMK, BJP and NTK. The DMK, which is running for 22 seats, is leading an eight-party alliance that includes the Congress (9 seats), CPI(M) (2), CPI (2), Indian Muslim League, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi (KMDK), whose candidate will run under the DMK symbol. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (5 seats) is a member of an alliance led by the AIADMK (34 seats) and four other parties. Additionally, Puthiya Tamilagam and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) are running under the AIADMK emblem. The BJP has paired up with nine other parties to contest 23 seats, including AIADMK splinter factions, Pattali Makkal Katchi, and Tamil Maanila Congress. Lastly, the NTK is competing without any alliance.
Except for 2009, when the state produced a somewhat divided outcome, with the DMK and its allies getting 27 seats and the opposing coalition, led by AIADMK, winning the remaining seats, one of the two alliances has overwhelmingly won Tamil Nadu's general elections since 2004. However, the Tamil Nadu elections in 2024 will be a Four-way contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the AIADMK, the NTK and the INDIA bloc, which includes the DMK, Congress, and others.
