Kolkata's Sealdah court on Saturday pronounced its verdict in the rape and murder case of a young doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Judge Anirban Das found civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty in the case. The court will pronounce the sentence on Monday. Sanjay Roy said, "I had a Rudraksha necklace around my neck. IF I had done this in that case, it would have been there. I am being framed." The judge said, "All the evidence has been submitted. The conviction is based on that evidence. ’
Additional District Sessions Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah court convicted Roy under sections 64 (rape), 66 (murder after rape), and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita while delivering the verdict in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case.
However, Sanjay claimed that he did not do this. "Why are those who did it being released?" he asked. The judge said he would hear Sanjay on Monday, and he will announce punishment on that same day.
On August 9 last year, the body of a young doctor was found in the seminar room of the medicine department of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. She was accused of raping and murdering her. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, was arrested the same day after the incident.
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI. Later, on August 18, the Supreme Court had suo motu expressed interest in hearing the case. At that time, allegations of financial irregularities were raised against the then-principal of RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh. Sandip Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with the RG Kar Hospital scam.
On September 14, the CBI arrested R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital's former principal, Sandip Ghosh, and former officer-in-charge of the Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, for delaying the registration of an FIR and trying to destroy evidence in connection with the murder of the R.G. Kar doctor. Junior doctors staged protests across the state demanding justice. Many of the doctors also went on hunger strike. However, they called off their hunger strike after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to them and assured them that their safety would be ensured. Sandeep and Abhijeet have already been granted bail in the rape and murder cases. However, Sandip Ghosh is in jail as he did not get bail in the corruption case.
According to CBI sources, it had filed a charge sheet against Sanjay in a Sealdah court on October 7 on the basis of various pieces of evidence. The charges were framed against the civic volunteer on November 4. The trial began on November 11. However, Sanjay claimed that he was framed in court. The Sealdah court gave its verdict on Saturday.
