Justice Sanjiv Khanna is set to become the next Chief Justice of India. Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud has recommended the name of Justice Khanna as his successor. Justice Khanna is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after Justice Chandrachud. Justice Chandrachud is set to retire on November 10 after completing his two-year tenure. Justice Sanjiv Khanna is scheduled to take oath as the Chief Justice of India on November 11. He will remain the Chief Justice till May 13 next year.

The central government sent a letter to Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud on Friday, asking him to recommend the name of the next Chief Justice of India as per the Memorandum of Procedure. The Chief Justice recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna's name to the Center. According to the Memorandum of Procedure, judges are appointed and transferred to various high courts and constitutional courts like the Supreme Court. According to the rules, the Chief Justice of India is appointed by the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. Then he practiced in the district court of the Tis Hazari Complex. He has been involved in the legal profession for more than four decades. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019. In these five years, his bench has given some important judgments in the apex court.

Traditionally, a month before the retirement of the Chief Justice of India, the Union Law Ministry sent him a letter asking for the name of his successor. The Chief Justice wrote to the Union Law Ministry recommending him. The ministry had written a similar letter to Chief Justice of India Chandrachud on October 12, seeking the name of his successor. The Chief Justice conveyed his recommendation to the Union Law Ministry on Wednesday. Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on November 9, 2022.
