The Supreme Court's Suo Motu case in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in the R.G. Kar medical college and hospital in Kolkata was scheduled to be heard on September 27. However, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala was requested on Monday by counsel for one of the parties to adjourn the date of hearing. Next Monday, September 30, the bench of Chief Justice Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear the case.
According to sources, the West Bengal government on Monday drew the attention of a bench headed by the Chief Justice and sought deferment of the hearing of the case by two to three days. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud directed the matter to draw the court's attention again on Monday. The Supreme Court has responded to the state's plea.
The CBI has already submitted two status reports to the Supreme Court on the progress of the investigation in the R.G. Kar case. In the last hearing, the Chief Justice of India said that he was very upset after seeing the second report. He pointed out that the CBI was not sleeping. Their investigation will not be completed in a week. That will take time.
Kolkata: A young trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. People from all walks of life took to the streets to protest, demanding justice for the deceased. Junior doctors of hospitals in West Bengal went on strike and staged dahrna. The West Bengal government has transferred the Kolkata Police Commissioner, a DC-rank officer, and two officials of Swasthya Bhawan. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was first arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case. Later, on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the investigation was handed over to the CBI. The central agency has arrested former principal of RG Kara hospital Sandip Ghosh and officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal for allegedly destroying evidence in the rape and murder case.
