The judges who delivered the verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case in 2019 have been invited to attend the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on January 22.
The event has invited more than 50 legal experts, including former Chief Justices, judges, and notable attorneys.
On November 9, 2019, a five-judge bench consisting of former and current Chief Justices of India, Ranjan Gogoi, SA Bobde and DY Chandrachud, as well as former judges Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer, ruled in favor of constructing a grand Ram temple by a trust at the disputed site.
The court granted the disputed land to the deity Ram Lalla and instructed the government to provide an alternative five-acre land to the Muslim community for building a mosque. The Babri mosque stood on the birthplace of Lord Ram in Ayodhya. The saffron camp initiated a campaign in the late 1980s, which eventually led to the mosque's demolition in 1992.
Earlier this week, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that Justice Gogoi will be awarded the 'Assam Baibhav', which is the highest civilian award in the state. Mr. Sarma added that the award recognizes Justice Gogoi's exceptional efforts in expanding the delivery of justice and enriching jurisprudence. Justice Gogoi is the first judge from the northeast to occupy the position of Chief Justice of India.
