Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the long-awaited Thalassery-Mahe Bypass on Monday (March 11) through a video conferencing ceremony. This significant infrastructure development promises to alleviate traffic congestion on the Mahe and Thalassery road, offering a transformative solution for commuters.
Enhanced Travel Experience
The newly opened Thalassery-Mahe Bypass is poised to revolutionize travel, drastically reducing the distance between Muzhapilangad in Kannur and Azhiyoor in Kozhikode to just 18.6 km. Previously, this journey consumed 45 minutes; however, with the introduction of the bypass, it can now be completed in a mere 14 minutes. A trial run was conducted to gauge the bypass's efficiency, ensuring seamless travel for commuters.
Historical Context
Originating from a proposal in 1977, the Thalassery-Mahe Bypass project gained momentum in 2018 with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari spearheading its construction. With an estimated cost, including land acquisition, of Rs 1181 crore, the project has been entrusted to the EK Company of Perumbavoor, Ernakulam. Encompassing a 45-meter-wide six-lane road and spanning 85.5 acres of land, the bypass features notable components such as four river bridges, 21 underpasses, a railway flyover, and a toll plaza in Kolassery.
Toll rates and operations
Toll rates have been standardized for vehicles traversing the Thalassery-Mahe Bypass, with small private vehicles, including cars and jeeps, charged Rs 65, and buses levied Rs 225. The toll collection contract has been awarded to a firm from North India, with the toll plaza situated near Kolassery along the 18.6 km bypass route.
