At a recent event organized by the Ladies Study Group of the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata, filmmaker Kiran Rao voiced her concerns about the tragic August 9 incident at RG Kar Hospital, which claimed the life of a young medic. Describing the incident as "frightening and regrettable," Rao expressed solidarity with protesters demanding safer working conditions for women.

"I stand with the women, students, and doctors who have united to call for justice and better safety standards," she stated, urging the need for change.

Rao also took the opportunity to celebrate the selection of her latest film *Laapataa Ladies* as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. Released in March, the film follows the misadventures of two young brides who get lost on a train, exploring themes of identity that resonate with women across all social classes.

"Every woman can see a part of herself in this film," Rao said during the discussion, titled "Ladies Who Lead." She added that despite its challenges, the film instills a sense of optimism, making it its "main selling point."

Addressing her casting choices, Rao explained why she opted not to cast her former husband, Aamir Khan, in the role of a corrupt policeman. Reflecting on her Kolkata upbringing, Rao expressed gratitude for the city's egalitarian values, recalling her days at Loreto House. "Regardless of background, once we entered the school, we were all equals," she noted.

Though initially aspiring to study development economics, filmmaking has clearly become Rao’s true calling.
