Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan unveiled ‘KaWaChaM’ (Kerala Warnings, Crisis, and Hazard Management), an advanced disaster risk warning system developed by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) with support from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the World Bank. The initiative aims to enhance disaster preparedness, improve response mechanisms, and issue alerts for extreme weather events.

During the launch event, the Chief Minister highlighted that KaWaChaM is India’s first comprehensive disaster warning system. Currently, 91 sirens have been installed across the state, with plans to expand to 126 locations. The system includes 24/7 emergency operation centers, surveillance cameras, and control rooms. Each siren is equipped with three lights—red, yellow, and orange—and eight loudspeakers capable of broadcasting alerts up to 1.2 kilometers. These sirens are strategically placed on government buildings and schools in disaster-prone areas.

While acknowledging the challenges of achieving absolute accuracy in weather predictions, especially given Kerala’s complex geography and climate, the Chief Minister urged the public to take warnings seriously.

The launch event was attended by Minister for Revenue K Rajan, Minister for Agriculture P Prasad, MLA VK Prasanth, and Principal Secretary for Disaster Management Tinku Biswal. KaWaChaM is set to play a pivotal role in safeguarding lives and property in the face of natural disasters, reinforcing Kerala’s commitment to disaster resilience.
