In a proactive step to tackle potential monsoon-related disasters, the Kerala government has sanctioned funds for districts and local bodies to enhance preparedness and response measures. The initiative aims to reduce the impact of heavy rains and flooding expected during the season.
As per an official directive from the state’s Disaster Management Department, each district collector has been allotted Rs 1 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). From this, up to Rs 25 lakh can be used at the discretion of the district collector to carry out immediate relief or preparedness activities as required.
Acknowledging the increased flood risk in urban regions, the government has allocated an additional Rs 2 crore each to Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode districts. These funds are specifically designated for flood prevention efforts and related works within the city limits, where waterlogging and infrastructure challenges are common during the monsoon.
In addition to district-level funding, financial assistance has been released to local self-government institutions to ensure grassroots-level readiness. Grama panchayats will receive Rs 1 lakh each, municipalities Rs 3 lakh, and corporations Rs 5 lakh to carry out essential monsoon preparedness tasks.
District collectors have been instructed to assess the overall fund requirements for their respective local bodies and submit detailed recommendations to the state government without delay. The move underlines the government’s focus on swift, coordinated action to mitigate risks and safeguard communities from monsoon-induced disasters.
