Darshan Babu, employed as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department in Hosadurga, had developed a penchant for betting on cricket matches, particularly Indian Premier League (IPL) games, since 2021. He frequently borrowed money to cover losses or to place additional bets when funds were low. Ranjitha, aged 23, tragically took her own life due to the constant harassment from creditors.
Darshan's betting activities had a severe impact on the couple's financial stability. Reportedly, he had borrowed more than ₹1.5 crore for betting purposes, resulting in substantial debt. Although he managed to repay ₹1 crore, authorities claim that he still owes ₹84 lakh.
The couple tied the knot in 2020, but Ranjitha only became aware of Darshan's betting activities in 2021, according to her father Venkatesh. In his statement, Venkatesh highlighted that his daughter faced immense distress due to persistent harassment from moneylenders, ultimately leading to her tragic decision.
Venkatesh also identified 13 individuals who allegedly lent money to Darshan, further exacerbating the family's predicament. He stated that Darshan was coerced into betting with the promise of quick wealth. "He (Darshan) was not interested in betting initially, but the suspects pressured him, claiming it was an effortless route to prosperity. They assured to fund his betting endeavors in exchange for blank cheques as collateral," Venkatesh explained.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a suicide note penned by Ranjitha, outlining the ordeal they endured. Darshan and Ranjitha leave behind a two-year-old son, adding to the tragedy of the situation.
