The JD(S) has taken a significant step by suspending Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna from the party following allegations of his involvement in sex videos and abuse of women. The decision came during the party's core committee meeting held in Hubballi on Tuesday. The move follows the state government's establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. The committee opted to suspend Prajwal until the SIT report is released, with expulsion being considered if he is convicted.
Former Chief Minister and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy emphasized that the party would not shield Prajwal and stressed that the truth would be revealed through the SIT investigation. He also called for a separate inquiry into the origin and dissemination of the videos, particularly concerning their release prior to the Lok Sabha polls in Hassan.
Kumaraswamy leveled accusations against KPCC president and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, alleging a significant role in leaking the videos. He accused Congress leaders of distributing the pen drives containing the videos, which he claimed tarnished the dignity of the victims. Kumaraswamy criticized Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, for allegedly involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the issue, asserting that Prajwal's case is a personal matter and the party is handling it accordingly.
Asserting JD(S)'s commitment to respecting women and safeguarding their dignity, Kumaraswamy emphasized that the party would take action to protect their rights.
In an official statement, JD(S) Secretary General K R Shivakumar announced Prajwal Revanna's immediate suspension from the party. The decision was made under Article XXII Breach of Discipline-4 and Punishment-6 of the party's constitution and rules, with approval from JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda, following a recommendation from the party's core committee.
Meanwhile, tension escalated at Denissons Hotel in Hubballi, the venue of the JD(S) core committee meeting, as Congress party workers staged protests against Prajwal Revanna's alleged involvement in the scandal.
