The rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across the country. The protests have also spread abroad. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the largest organization of doctors, has called for a 24-hour strike across the country on Saturday, August 17. All non-emergency medical services will be closed from 6 a.m. on Saturday to 6 a.m. on Sunday. As a result, outdoor will not open.
According to the association, doctors will refrain from providing all services for 24 hours, except emergency services. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday to protest the attack on R.G. Kar Hospital on Wednesday night. In a statement, the doctors' organization said, "All essential services will remain operational. Arrangements will be made for the treatment of the casualties. But the OPD will not function regularly, and elective surgeries (optional surgeries that are not a problem later) will not be performed. Wherever doctors of modern medicine provide services, services will be withdrawn in those sectors. The IMA is seeking the sympathy of the entire country with the legitimate reasons of the doctors. '
Junior doctors at the hospital have been protesting across the country since Saturday over the R.G. Kar incident. A large number of doctors in different states of the country have been demanding justice for the rape and murder of a woman doctor. RV Ashokan, president of the Medical Association of India (IMA), and the All India Secretary of IMA visited Bengal and met the family of the deceased woman doctor. Professors of Jadavpur University also took part in the protest. Professors at Jadavpur University have called for a strike on Friday. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association has called for a sit-in at Aurobindo Bhawan from 1 pm to 3 pm. The Jadavpur University Teachers' Association has called for a full-day work abstention on August 16, demanding justice in the rape and murder of a trainee female doctor.
A post-graduate trainee (PGT) female doctor was raped and killed on night duty on August 8. Her body was recovered from the seminar hall of the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital the next night. During the investigation, the police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy. On August 13, the case was handed over to the CBI on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
