In a significant move reflecting India’s evolving global academic stance, the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) has terminated its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sabanci University in Turkey. The decision, taken in alignment with national interest, comes amid strained India-Turkey relations following Ankara’s public support for Pakistan.
The MoU, initially signed in September 2023 for five years, was designed to enhance academic collaboration through student exchange programmes. However, the institute has chosen to withdraw from the partnership in response to the shifting geopolitical climate.
IIMK stated that the severance of ties was prompted by the “current geopolitical situation involving Turkey” and confirmed that Sabanci University has been formally notified. Professor Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, emphasised that the institution’s global partnerships are closely aligned with national priorities. He noted that the decision followed thorough deliberation and reflects the institute’s commitment to upholding India’s strategic values in its international engagements.
This move highlights a growing trend among Indian educational institutions to review and reassess global collaborations in light of diplomatic and security concerns. As geopolitical sensitivities rise, academia is increasingly expected to reflect national interests in forming cross-border partnerships.
IIM Kozhikode’s action signals a more cautious and strategically informed approach to international academic cooperation, underscoring the importance of aligning institutional goals with the broader national context.
