The Assam government has repealed the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act of 1935. The decision was taken by the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday night. Minister Jayant Malbaruah, who is also in the cabinet meeting, told the media that there is no need for this law, which has been in force since the British era.
From now on, all responsibility in this regard will be on the district commissioners. The minister said that with the repeal of this law, child marriage in Assam will also disappear. It is to be noted that this old law has been in the news in the state for a long time now. From now on, district commissioners will be able to take all decisions related to Muslim marriage registration and divorce.
Uttarakhand became the first state to pass a UCC law earlier this month, and Assam has hinted at enacting a similar law. The Himanta Biswa Sarma government is expected to present a UCC bill during the budget session, which ends on February 28.
