US President Joe Biden announced new plans on Monday to reduce the amount of money people owe for going to college. He hopes this will help him win the votes of young people in the election coming up in November. This is because young people's votes are very important in elections.
Before this, President Biden had tried to cancel a lot of the money people owed for college, but the Supreme Court, which has more conservative people in it, said no in June.
The White House said the new plans would help more than 30 million Americans with their debt. It would help 23 million people by getting rid of the extra money they have to pay on top of what they borrowed. It would also cancel the debt completely for four million people. And it would give at least $5,000 less debt for more than 10 million people.
The Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, said this would give people some relief. It would mean they wouldn't have to worry so much about paying back their student loans, especially when they need money for other things like food or going to the doctor.
The White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, said Biden will do everything he can to get rid of student debt, even if some politicians don't want him to.
The White House also said these new plans are similar to what the Supreme Court said was okay last year. The Supreme Court is a group of judges who decide if things follow the rules of the country.
In the last election, young people helped Biden win against the Republican president at the time, Donald Trump. This year, Biden needs them to vote for him again.
Biden's plan to help people with student debt was a big part of why young people voted for him, but it didn't work out the way he wanted it to before. The Supreme Court stopped him from canceling more than $400 billion of debt. The Supreme Court is made up of judges, and three of them were picked by Trump while he was president. They usually make more conservative decisions, and they did the same thing last year when they said people couldn't get abortions anymore.
