The Sheikh Hasina government has expressed its displeasure over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks on Bangladesh. They claimed that they informed the government of Indua about this. The Bangladesh government claims that Mamata's words have created 'confusion'. On Tuesday, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Mohammed Hasan Mahmud said, "With due respect to Mamata Banerjee, her statement has spread confusion. He also said that a "note" has been given to the Indian government in this regard.
On the stage of TMC's Martyr's Day on July 21, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "I cannot say anything about Bangladesh. Because it's a different country. Whatever the Indian government says. But I can say this: if helpless people knock at the doors of Bengal, we will surely give them shelter. Because the United Nations has a resolution that if anyone becomes a refugee, the surrounding area will help them.”
Mamata Banerjee's comments drew flak from political circles. On Monday, BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Mamata wants to legitimize infiltration. Only the Government of India has full jurisdiction to deal with such matters. Ravi Shankar Prasad also referred to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in this context.
On the other hand, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has sought a report on Mamata's remarks on Bangladesh. This was stated in a post by the 'Officer on Special Duty' of Raj Bhavan on the X (former Twitter) handle of his department's media cell on Monday. In the midst of allegations and counter-allegations, the Bangladesh government objected to Mamata's words.
Bangladesh has been heated for several days in the center of the student movement, demanding the cancellation of reservations.
