Bangladesh's interim leader Dr Muhammad Yunus made a key announcement on the cruicial presidential elections. As the leader of country's interim government, he stated on December 16 (Monday) that elections might occur by late 2025, contingent upon the implementation of electoral reforms beforehand.

In a national television address, an occasional speech marking the 53rd anniversary of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan after nine months of war, Yunus said elections would only be possible after electoral reforms. Since August, Bangladesh has been governed by a temporary administration headed by its sole Nobel Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, following the resignation and escape to India of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during widespread demonstrations.

Muhammad Yunus said that country is likely to go to general elections either by the end of next year or early 2026. He said that the election dates could be decided mostly by the end of 2025. He said that several electoral reforms need to be carried out before the general elections. If political parties agree to hold elections with minimum reforms such as a flawless voter list, the elections could be held by the end of November 2025. It may take a few more months to clear the full list of electoral reforms. These comments came as pressure on Yunus over the conduct of the elections is increasing.

It is known that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country in August this year due to a student uprising. Nobel laureate Yunus was later appointed as the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh.
