Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his support for the recently released film The Sabarmati Report, which delves into the 2002 Godhra train burning incident that triggered widespread communal unrest in Gujarat. In a reaction on the social media platform X, Modi praised the film for bringing out "the important truth" about the tragic event, which has remained a subject of intense political debate for over two decades.

The film, directed by Dheeraj Sarna and starring Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra, explores the controversial train fire and its aftermath. It is based on true events, including the brutal burning of the Sabarmati Express, which claimed the lives of more than 50 passengers. This incident became a flashpoint for the Gujarat riots, and the involvement of various political and social groups in shaping the narrative has been the subject of much debate over the years.

Modi’s comments came after a user on X praised the film for highlighting the truth behind the incident. The user remarked that the tragic event had been politicized by vested interests to tarnish the image of "one leader," widely interpreted as Modi himself. Responding to this, Modi stated, "Well said. "It’s encouraging that this truth is being revealed in a way that is accessible to the general public," he said. He also stressed that "false narratives can only last for so long," reinforcing his conviction that the truth will ultimately come to light.

The film's release coincides with Modi’s ongoing three-nation tour, which began with his visit to Nigeria, marking the first trip by an Indian prime minister in 17 years. Modi will then travel to Brazil and conclude his visit in Guyana from November 19 to 21.

The Sabarmati Report adds a cinematic lens to one of the most controversial and pivotal moments in recent Indian history, and Modi’s endorsement of the film further fuels the ongoing discussions surrounding the events of 2002.
