Tata to manufacture iPhones in India For The Worldwide Market

With the approval of Wistron's board, Tata Group is poised to become the first Indian manufacturer of iPhones, having sold its Bengaluru facility to the software-to-salt company. Wistron stated in a statement that a preliminary estimate of the transaction price is USD 125 million. The move is a substantial shift from Apple's prior policy of selling primarily Chinese-made new gadgets to eager buyers worldwide, and it highlights India's expanding production capabilities. This will make the group the first domestic iPhone manufacturer in India.

"Wistron Corp held a Board of Directors meeting today and granted approval for its subsidiaries , SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Wistron Hong Kong Ltd to sign the Share Purchase Agreement with Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL) for the sale of its 100 per cent indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Pvt Ltd (WMMI),," the company announced in a statement. Wistron will make the necessary announcements and filings in compliance with applicable regulations after the transaction is completed," the statement stated.

Presently, Wistron's Karnataka facility is responsible for the production and assembly of the iPhone SE (second generation), iPhone 12 and 15 Plus.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the minister of state for electronics and IT, announced the announcement on X. He stated that the IT Ministry is entirely in favor of the expansion of international Indian electronics companies, since these companies will in turn assist international electronic brands seeking to collaborate with India for talent and manufacturing.
