There is no substitute for parents because they do almost all the things to light a way that leads a success. They also guide and support us to mark an achievement in society.  The Global Day of Parents is observed on 1st June annually to honour parents and their commitments to children across the world. It is a United Nations (UN) observance day. The day provides us with an opportunity to appreciate parents and parental figures for the important role that they play in the development of families.

Parents Play Vital Role in Nurturing and Guiding Children:

Parents Day encourages paying respect and appreciating parents for what they do for their children, their selfless commitment to children, and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship. Most countries have the tradition to respect parents who are going for ages. Parents are the best gift of God. Nobody in life can take the place of parents. They are true well-wishers.

An Opportunity to Appreciate Parents:

The Global Day of Parents was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 with resolution A/RES/66/292 and honours parents throughout the world. The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship.

In its resolution, the General Assembly also noted that the family has the primary responsibility for the nurturing and protection of children and that child, for the full and harmonious development of their personality, should grow up in a family environment and in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.

The resolution recognizes the role of parents in the rearing of children and invites Member States to celebrate the Day in full partnership with civil society, particularly involving young people and children.

Significance of Global Day of Parents:

In this world, we can't see God but we have parents. In India, they are referred to as God. Since ancient times we taught to respect parents and elders. Nowadays due to a busy schedule, children are not able to spend their time with their parents. So, Global Day of Parents is the day to celebrate with the whole family, spending time with our parents and near ones. Children give gifts and show their gratitude by staying the whole day with them.

It also recognises that the family has the primary responsibility for the nurturing and protection of children. It is necessary for the development of children that they grow up in a good family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding. No doubt that family-oriented policies enable the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals related to doing away with hunger and poverty, promoting shared economic prosperity, social development, etc. The Centre of social life is family only.

International Day of Families:

Educational programs are also provided for parents and aim in promoting stability in the family. Other Organisations use this day to promote the traditional two-parent nuclear family model.

The United Nations during the 1980s began focusing its attention on the issues related to the family. On 9 December 1989 in the resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family and in the resolution of 1993, the General Assembly decided that 15 May will be observed as the International Day of the Families every year. As per the UN website, "In its resolution 44/82 of 9 December 1989, The General Assembly proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family; and in resolution 47/237 of 1993, the General Assembly decided that 15 May of every year to be observed as the International Day of Families. In 2012, the General Assembly proclaimed 1 June as the Global Day of Parents, to be observed annually in honour of parents throughout the world."
