The international governing body of cricket stated on Friday night that Sri Lanka Cricket's membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC) had been terminated by the ICC Board, effective immediately.

"Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, particularly the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka," the ICC stated in a brief press release. The ICC Board will determine the suspension's terms in due course.

Following the November 21 meeting of the ICC Board, further clarity regarding the future course of action is anticipated.The ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup is slated to take place in January and February of 2024 in Sri Lanka. The news follows the islands' tumultuous World Cup campaign, in which they have only won two of their nine games and are presently ranked ninth in the 10-team standings.

Regarding Sri Lankan cricket, discord has been building due to the national team's performance. The SLC management was fired on Monday by Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who also named former World Cup captain Arjuna Ranatunga as the head of a seven-person temporary council to oversee the cricket board. Nevertheless, the Court of Appeal reversed that.

The Sri Lankan parliament unanimously approved a motion later in the week calling for SLC's dismissal. It had the backing of parties on both sides of the dispute.

The ICC seemed displeased with the resolution that the Sri Lankan parliament approved. The last time a full member of the ICC was suspended was Zimbabwe Cricket, which was again the result of government meddling, two years ago.
